I talked with the guitarist, lyricist, and the man behind most of the Overlordian songs they wrote so far. Here goes:
Deathinmelody : Hey there Overlord, Greetings from the Deathinmelody family. How are you doing?
Overlord : Greetings! We are doing as alright.. just going with the flow as usual..
Deathinmelody : Great to know, it's an honor to have you here with us tonight. Can you let us know about your credentials and position in the band before we begin a little chat ?
Overlord : Sure. my name is Priyotosh and I play guitar in the band. I also compose tracks, write lyrics and manage the band at present.
The feeling of honor is mutual :)
Deathinmelody : Great! and nice to meet you Priyotosh, so tell us something about how your Overlord spawned and it's initial journey.
Overlord : Ah! The very first story goes back 6 years, in 2010, I was randomly playing the Arch Enemy track 'Marching on a dead end road' in my university backyard. When suddenly another fellow named Zarif started to play the other guitar parts of the same song, it was like a miracle!!
That was the first interaction between the two guitarists and since then we've played together like a thousand times and composed numerous tracks.. eventually we realized the chemistry and searched for other band members to form a Melodic Death Metal band.. which resulted in Overlord being born.
Deathinmelody : Hahaha! That's something I can call one evil coincidence! That's interesting. Well As you see melodic death metal is really rare in Bangladeshi scene and even In Dhaka it seems to be a thriving palace for thrash, do you guys somehow feel secluded?
Overlord: About the genre crisis,
It is kind of sad to see not so many bonafide listeners of Melodeath... With all due respect, I notice the reign of other genres, extreme metal, thrash, death, brutal death, technical death, black metal, blackened death etc.
Folk metal and Melodeath are the genres which are pretty much left out, sadly
We always like to meet and greet with all the metalheads around us, we don't feel secluded in that sense at all
Deathinmelody : Well, that's why we are here trying hard to exhume what is left , yes we are talking about the mighty melodic death metal.
Do you want to mention any names of similar acts across Bangladesh that you find as "Good Stuff" ?
Overlord : I believe there will be very good melodic death metal bands in the coming years..
Personally, I know some melodeath bands from which many have disbanded
The surviving one's are dormant except for a few, like Ionic Bond from Chittagong, they're out there, doing what they do best
I like their work, raises hope in this crisis era of the melodeath genre.
Deathinmelody : We all hope for the best for the revival of the sound of melodeath.
Can you name great inspirations of you or bands that inspires Overlord ?
Overlord : Yes, I also know some other bands, who are quite young and energetic, but still lacking the maturity for producing a unique and sustaining fresh sound, but I believe those bands will get there eventually
Overlord : Ah! When it comes to inspiration and motivation part, the first and foremost name is always Arch Enemy!
Deathinmelody : Yes! now I can surely say there has been a Khaos Legions invasion here in Bangladesh, hahaha !
Overlord : Zarif and I, we are die hard fans of Arch Enemy, but we are also heavily influenced by a concoction of bands like Septic Flesh, Dark Tranquility, Kalmah, Insomnium
Overlord : Hahahaha!! The Khaos Legions invasion is still due brother! wink emoticon*Wink*
Deathinmelody : My personal favorite Overlord number has been Spawn, really exquisite. Can you tell us something about the song?
Overlord : As the name implies
it signifies the inception of the band, its first song
and unlike many other bands, Overlord has a vision, an objective, a theme
Spawn is a calling for revolution
"Let the flames ignite" as we've said
Deathinmelody : Awesome, now that's what I call one ace philosophy of metal. and that has something to do with this growing scene.
Overlord : The lyrics speak pretty much for themselves
I believe every band has a strong responsibility to make the world a better place and express their emotions through music and lyrics.
Deathinmelody : agreed, and I guess that's how it should be.
Overlord : 777, unlike the 666, number of the beast
We are here for good, to spread peace, to unite people against the odds and oppression.
Deathinmelody : Do you somehow call it religious metal? like Christian metal?
Overlord : No, its not religious but righteous.
If I consider the New World Order and the Illuminati to be true and their evil activities to confine the world in a robotic, post industrial, controlled environment fed humans
That's what we are strongly against
All of our lyrics and the overall band theme is designed surrounding this vision
So you can say, we are in a mission, if our music and lyrics can make the slightest change and realization in a person's mind, we will be successful.
And now if you listen to spawn again, you can relate to it more.
Deathinmelody : I see, that's some food for thought. and I guess materials like this should be instrumented soon. That's my hope on Overlord. Are we getting any news on anything coming up in the future?
Overlord : We're working on our solo album.. we've composed like about 13 songs..
Currently recording the bits and pieces for the album, challenges are there.
Deathinmelody : great, and any prospected dates about the release? contracts with the label?
Overlord : time conflicts, resource optimization and other issues, but yes, we are hopeful to get there within this year
Umm... we really haven't thought much about the marketing or business prospects of record label and stuff...
At present we're concentrating more on the music
We want to release the album by the middle of this year, but can't say for sure at the moment.. so let's see what happens! We are trying however we can... fingers crossed!! Wish us luck with this!
Deathinmelody: I see and we are hoping for the best for Overlord
. Tell us about your experience on your single "The Enemy". Releasing on a mixed album which as we know, 'Riotous 14", how was the feedback?
Overlord : The Enemy is interesting in many ways..
I personally composed a few parts of the song back in 2006, as a personal repository of riffs and other melodies
I brought it to the band and all the guys, specially Zarif upgraded and updated it, the whole structure, and made it what it is now
Our keyboardist Kanak, has done a great job too
And our friend and well wisher played the 2nd solo as a guest appearance, his name is Frank Hardy Roy
We received mixed feedbacks. Most people could relate with the theme
Though not entirely, but the lyrics made sense to them.. they welcomed the unconventional starting
but the song builds up later and the keyboard release was the part people liked most
Our very good friend Russell Skillwarz did a great job mixing and mastering the songs.
Deathinmelody : Great, I can call it a success for a debut single. Are you planning to hit overseas ? or at-least any mixed album from the foreign?
Overlord : Our debut single was Spawn. The Enemy is our 2nd release
Deathinmelody : Oh my bad, Yes, I might have lost the track with the timeline haha!
Overlord : We're more inclined towards releasing the solo album, but releasing song in a foreign mixed would be great too! grin emoticon
Oh it's fine brother.. First release was Spawn and then The Enemy was released.
I must mention that, Shahriar Nabi Orchi has been a blessing for the band
He was the one who saw the potential in us and eventually inspired us to work harder
So the band is always grateful to him for all that he did.
Deathinmelody : Yes and thank you for correcting me.
I see, that's really great when we see a brotherhood developing in a scene, and this is really essential for underrated Bangladeshi music.
So Priyotosh, tell us something about melodic death metal that you find really attractive?
Overlord : I believe instead of fighting and comparing with each other
We as metalheads, should always be by our sides and support each other like brothers and keep the spirit of the brotherhood strong
Attraction about Melodic Death Metal, I can pass all night talking about that.. haha tongue emoticon
But to make it short, it's like a soft core with a hard shell.
Deathinmelody : hahaha ! here we have one avid melo-death metaller I can say. that's a pride !
Overlord : Thank you!
The aggression of metal, the riffs, the pounding drums, the craze of boiling blood its all there
While the melody gives a sense of relief.
Deathnmelody : Awesome
can you name one word which describes all the songs of Overlord and all your philosophies.
Overlord : It drives the listener to feel those innate notes that touches the soul
its the combination, the beauty of these two elements which attracts me.. I can be forever lost
Brother, picking one word is really difficult :p
Deathinmelody : and that's the game!
Overlord : How about you help us a little
Tell me, as you are a very good writer yourself
Deathinmelody : I've been asking the same questions to all the bands I talked with so far haha!
Overlord : How would you describe your feeling about us? :p
Deathinmelody : ummm, now that's a good counter. Well maybe someday when I get to hear the full album i guess?
Overlord : Haha! Talk about counters!
Yes, we would love to have your review
and in a word I can say it as 'Righteous'.
Deathinmelody : that was my guess, hahaa!
Overlord : And you could've helped! :p
Deathinmelody : Well it's been a great chat with you Priyotosh, on behalf of deathinmelody family we pray you a bright future of metal ahead.
Till then , horns up for Overlord!
Overlord : The pleasure is all mine and of all the members of Overlord
Thanks a bunch to you and deathinmelody.
