"Creeping Time", Misteyes to release the full fledged album this April 8th, 2016 - A chat with Irmin about the new album

Hello Readers and welcome again to our 8th episode of Deathinmelody Interviews. Today we have Misteyes on the house, who are one of the most prominent and promising act from the hometown Torino,Italy. The band has recently announced their full-length release entitled Creeping Time, where they are featuring Björn Strid (Soilwork) and Nicole Ansperger (Ex - Eluveitie) on the record.

Deathinmelody:
Hello Irmin, greetings from the Deathinmelody community. We are really excited about the new album. Before readers get to know about the album can you at first can you tell us about your initial journey and a brief history of Misteyes?

Irmin : Hi! Thanks for this space! Yes, I'm Irmin, one of the two singers of the band. In 2012 I met Insanus, Decadence (the two guitar players) and the drummer Krieger that wanted to start a band with influences from melodic death metal to black and doom metal. With this five member line-up we released the single "Brains In A Vat" in 2013. In 2014 the band started a deep evolution of the sound with the adding of more melodic and symphonic elements, given also by the entry of the two new members Ainwen (female vocals) and Hyde (keyboards). With this line-up we had many shows and we worked hard for the writing of new songs and then for the recordings in the studio and now we are finally ready to release out first full-length album!

Deathinmelody: Can you tell us the significance behind the genre Light and Dark Metal? Can you tell us something about the lyrical elements of the prospected album?

Irmin: Well, since the beginning during the writing of the first songs we understood that our music is a quite unusual mixture of sub-genres. As every existing definition couldn't perfectly fix with our music, we decided to create our own one. "Light and Dark" is referred to the contrast between two entities that are always present in our songs: the softer side characterized by the female vocals and by the gothic, symphonic and melodic influences and the heavier side with the growl/scream vocals, the black/death guitar riffs and the dark and obscure atmosphere.   Talking about our lyrics,  they are mainly about philosophical and introspective subjects. In particular, those of this album are focused on the passage of time and for this reason we decided to call the album "Creeping Time".

Deathinmelody: How far has the work of the album proceeded till now? Can you hint us about the elements you are going to unleash in Creeping Time?

Irmin: The works on the album are already finished and we are going to release it on April 8th under the Canadian label Maple Metal Records. It is a very varied album, there you are going to find both ballads and heavier songs with many influences. However we think that every song of the album has the typical trademark of the Misteyes sound: the use of two opposite kind of vocals, male growl/scream vocals and female clean and opera vocals (with equal importance within the tracks), a very refined job of orchestrations that reminds to the epic and horror soundtracks, heavy death and black riffs, a very unique use of both fretted bass (for the heavier parts) and fretless bass (for the more melodic parts) and a very modern sound of the drums.

Deathinmelody: As we all know, Misteyes is featuring two renowned major artists around the globe, none other than Björn Strid (Soilwork) and Nicole Ansperger (Ex - Eluveitie). Tell us something about your experience working with them.

Irmin: Yes, it was really amazing having Björn and Nicole on our album, a dream that came true! It was really easy to work with them, they both are very nice people and, above all, extremely talented musicians! Talking about Björn, I was talking with him, asking him some advices for my voice techniques and in that period we were searching for a male vocalist to add a little more modern sound to one of our songs, so I could not miss this opportunity and I asked him. When he listened to the pre-production version of the song he was enthusiastic and he did a fantastic job adding his own personal style to the song! For Nicole the story was quite similar, we wanted to add some violin tracks and a violin solo on the last track of the album. I didn't know Nicole personally but I knew the great work she did for Eluveitie, so I decided to write to her. Since the first messages I understood she was the right person! We gave her complete freedom to write the violin lines and we were really stoked when she sent back the tracks done!

Deathinmelody: What is your perception on the local scene and issues with underground music?

Irmin: The underground metal scene here in Italy is very present but it has also many problems. First of all there are too many bands and too many bands doing the same kind of music without trying to experiment something new. On the other hand, the people attending underground shows are fewer and ferwer. People go to shows only because they are friends of the band members and not because they like their music, so there's not much meritocracy and autoselection of the best bands.

Deathinmelody: Are you planning to tour after the album release? or any further plans?

Irmin: No, we have not planned a proper tour for now. At this time we prefer making a selection of unique shows and festivals. On April 10th there will be the release party of the album in our hometown Turin and then we are having other shows and festivals in Spring and Summer in
Italy. The other plans for the immediate future are to promote the album in every way possible! We are going to release some official and lyric videos and a new great photo-shoot!

Deathinmelody: Can you tell us the mastermind behind the awesome artwork of Creeping Time?

Irmin: Sure! It is the result of the work of the great and well-known Italian artist Design Overload (Alessandro "Dooms" Alimonti). He did an amazing job that perfectly evokes what you are going to expect for both the musical part and the lyrical themes of the album. He also created the booklet and most of the graphic works for our socials!

Deathinmelody: Can you name inspirations behind your music career, and those who inspired Misteyes?

Irmin: Personally talking, my first inspirations as a growl/scream vocalist can be find in melodic death metal, especially Dark Tranquillity. Then I started expanding my musical background to different subgenres in the extreme metal with bands like Death, Cradle Of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Lamb Of God, Kataklysm, Novembers Doom, Graveworm and many others.  Talking about Misteyes is more difficult, 'cause our influences are many and they are the sum of the inspirations for each member of the group. However most of the bands that influenced our sound can be find both on melodic and symphonic metal bands like Epica, After Forever or Kamelot, but also extreme metal bands like Cradle Of Filth, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Septicflesh and a little bit of the doom melancholic melodies of bands like Candlemass or Draconian.

Deathinmelody: As we know, you work with another band Gotland, can you tell us something about it?

Irmin: Yes, I met the guys of Gotland two years ago when with Misteyes we opened for two of their shows. Since then I was fascinated by their music, both for the way they manage to maintain the power of extreme black/death metal even adding epic and melodic influences, but also for their evocative lyrics talking about the clash between the Roman Empire and the Barbarians, a subject I have always been fond of. So when, some months later, they were searching for a new singer I proposed myself and I have started playing with them since July 2015. The band has been active since 2007, so for me it was an hard challenge to replace the original singer who had been with them for 8 years! For now, we are still having shows to promote their fantastic album "Gloria Et Morte" (released in 2014), but at the same time we are working on some amazing new material, so if you are interested on an epic/extreme metal band with historical lyrics, follow us!

Deathinmelody: In your perception, what brings perfection to a band?

Irmin : That's a very hard question. I'll not talk about the music in particular ('cause it's too subjective), but at least the sound has to be original and not a mere copy of another band. However to reach perfection, in my opinion, the members have to take care also of all the other aspects of the band: good graphics, professional videos and photo-sets, a very good stage presence, the merchandise and they also should behave in a professional way in the socials and interacting with fans!

Thank you for your time Irmin, we wish you a very successful launch of the new album and waiting eagerly for the mighty masterpiece!
